The shipyard on the island Khortytsia was laid in 1737 during the Russian-Turkish war. The place was chosen to bypass the Dnipro rapids, for it was impossible to throw the Russian fleet. At the shipyard were built Russian brigantines, boats and canoes. The last two strongly resembled the legendary Cossack gulls. After two years of construction on the island there were about 400 ships, but some of them got under the water during a high flood. One of these buildings was found in 1998. In another 9 years they found a dowel-boat, a brigantine, a one-day boat and a kayak. Now the corps is conserved and is being gradually restored on the island's slipway.
