About the location

The original monument to the refined sugar was installed in the center of Sumy in 2010, opposite the monument to the famous Ukrainian sugar maker Ivan Kharitotenko – on the occasion of the 355th anniversary of the founding of the city.

Ivan Kharytonenko did quite a lot for Sumy. He was engaged in sugar business – and thanks to him in the XIX century the city prospered. For the money received from selling sugar, Ivan Kharytonenko developed the city and was a generous patron. Noble residents of Sumy did not forget their patron and established a monument to him.

Today, sugar is not produced in Sumy, but in the city there are many monuments dedicated to it. On a large refined cube with missing pieces of sugar, one can climb the stone blocks to take pictures of the sights, which symbolizes the wealth of the area.
