"House merchant of Zakharyin "

0 23 0

The house belonged to a merchant of the 2nd guild, a burgomaster, and the mayor of the city of Oleksandrivsk – Zakharin P.L.

The exact date of construction is unknown, but the building was reconstructed many times for different needs. Originally, it was a one-story P-shaped building with a basement, and the main facade faced the Holy Protection Cathedral. In the 1860s, a major reconstruction was carried out, adding a second floor. Two open external staircases were added from the courtyard to access the second floor.

In 1866, a local self-government was formed – the county council, which rented the building from merchant Zakharin, as it did not have its own premises. Later, a county telegraph office was located here. The building continued to be rebuilt, and another two-story superstructure appeared on the right wing of the building.

During World War I, a military hospital was located in the building, and during World War II, a German military hospital for officers was established. After the war, the building was adapted for a post office, which is still located here today.
